May 21
Moved into new housing today, in the suburbs. As a result only walked only 6km. The new place is on the banks of the Red River and is a reminder of the unexpected power of nature along with the pleasure. I walked to the nearest grocery store to stock up on basic supplies and in the process began to understand the basic hostility of suburbs to the act of walking. Arterial roads intersecting with local throughways converging with railway right of ways does not make for friendly pedestrian activity. Trying to avoid being run down by people riding bicycles on the sidewalk, even with bicycle lanes immediately beside the pedestrian path, makes me wonder about walking and cycling in the city. The river seems peaceful in comparison.
